Lessons From Mother Nature

Winter provides most of us time for reflection.

It also provides a time for us to gather our resources and renew our energies in many directions. As I sit in my library, I have but to look out the window to see how closely our delightful lifestyle mimics the direction provided by Mother Nature. The “Pineapple Express” is visiting the southern coast of our fair province. Our vanilla cousins may see this as a negative thing. There are indeed very positive things to be observed.

We know that the greatest Dominant of them all, Mother Nature has no problem using the "Pineapple Express" to flood our roads, cut off our power, disrupt our Internet and re-arrange a few dozen trees. She has even been known to modify the landscape by re-designing the shapes of mountains and hills. Her energies are legendary. In spite of this furious assault, there are things that flourish.

Consider the winter pansy. My tiny garden is resplendent with this tiny little plant. There is absolutely no cover for my garden. These little plants have no protection from Mother Nature's temperatures, wind and relentless rain. They have had to withstand winds of 60 kilometres per hour whipping them. They have endured days of flogging by the rain. How are these little plants responding to this treatment by the Dominant Goddess? They are blooming and flourishing. They are providing me endless pleasure with their vibrant colours and active growth.

Pansies in Winter by Marilyn SeibringThe winter pansy shares much in common with our precious slaves. Like the winter pansy, our delightful slaves at first glance are not considered for their strength and endurance. Many dominants have learned that slaves are at their best when serving the whims of the dominant. The winter pansies in my garden are serving the whims of Mother Nature and providing immense pleasure.

The beautiful plants that provided pleasure and comfort during the gentle warm, days of the spring and summer have long since passed. Their splendour was transitory and short-lived when faced with a more demanding environment. This phenomenon can be compared to the lack of true, long term satisfaction we face in the world of vanilla. The winter pansy satisfies the desire for a deeper, more enduring level of passion. This trait is found in the precious slave. The temporary flowers of summer are provided to any who desire them at almost any store of every street corner for the entire spring and summer. The winter pansy can only be found for a few short weeks and they have to be sought out. This trait is also found with the precious slave. They are found only after a diligent search.

As I walk the streets of my neighbourhood these days, I see the remnants of the splendid gardens of the summer. There are bare branches and empty soil all around. It is a cold and barren view. When I view my tiny little garden, there is colour, growth and splendour. The winter pansy of my garden does not have a large stature. It exists only to serve a personal pleasure and it devotes its being to that task. This trait is also found with the loving, precious slave.

There are so many things provided by Mother Nature to encourage and further our delightful lifestyle. It is Mother Nature that provides the stinging nettle, bamboo, the birch. Mother Nature provides the incredible hemp plant for rope. It is Mother Nature that provides those wonderful, wonderful endorphins. Even the tiny winter pansy serves to give us further encouragement along our paths.
