Bondage 101 - Calgary Herald 2003/10/15

University student life should not be dominated by a no-gay ethic. Nor should those with outre tastes be tied down by rules and conventions.

All the same, a gay students campus organization at the University of Victoria -- which has hired a local sado-masochistic group to give classes on safe bondage -- should be restrained from doing it on university premises. While we have no wish to handcuff free expression between consenting adults, taxpayers should not have to subsidize it, through allowing the use of public facilities.

The three-hour workshop, which costs $15, teaches participants how to avoid death by strangulation and cutting off blood flow to limbs. We believe participants should pay the true costs, including an off-campus hall rental.

U Vic officials say the workshop is not being presented by the university, but condones it. U Vic should not have allowed itself to be roped into this.
